aggressive feeding and watering

Post  stavros on Mon May 16, 2011 7:45 am

Walter Pall has uploaded some pictures from his garden, showing the results of aggressive feeding and watering, combined with modern substrates.
http://walter-pall-bonsai.blogspot.com/2011/05/effect-of-aggressive-feeding-and.html

We have been talking about this for a while now between us and slowly slowly some of us all have started from modern substrates and now we started to feed more and more aggressively.

I would also like to stress something that Walter says (one of the things that Graham Potter was repeating over and again when we visited him last April), which is overlooked or not explained well in books: we must let the trees grow freely and avoid pinching new growth as soon as it appears, it weakens the trees and reduces the growth rate

Will Baddeley mentioned on the IBC forum that he fertilizes with every watering. He firstly waters the trees thoroughly and then fertilizes in full power.

I haven' t tried it yet... I just started fertilizing like this twice a week...i have to overcome my fear and do it with every watering lol! lol! lol!

the sun?? No
The temperatures , yes... I would not fertilize if the temperatures go higher than 30C something (definetely no fetilization at 35 C = almost 100 F). The reason: at around 100F = 37.7C, a study on Pines shows that their growth rate was reduced by 95%, and at 117F=47.2C, conifers were killed after a few hours!! (http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/rootheat.htm)

Ideally, the temperatures that i would like to have in my garden until the winter would be 20-30 C (70-85F).....the trees have good growth rate.
If there is no growth, there is no need for fertilization

I can understand the benefits of aggressive feeding, but do we have a lets say 10 years back experience?

Do you think that our trees will be healthy after a few years?

Is aggresive feeding a doping for our trees? If is a doping what are the symptoms?

many bonsai enthusiasts have been doing it for many years with no problems if done properly.
